For quiet a long time in my early twenties I have been in a very dark time. I would spend hours and hours on YouTube, laying on my couch and let myself be consumed by videos others created. I would go to bed late at night and think about some videos that I have watched. Videos that showed young people, in their twenties, driving a Porsche and living in a house that is bigger than anything I have seen personal.
Social media is a great thing. It is a fantastic tool that allows us to learn more and faster just about anything. I mean there is literally a “How-to-Masterclass” on YouTube about anything! But with these ups, social media comes with it’s downs as well. And there is one specific problem that ruins to perspective and possibly lives of many young adults out there.
Being around the same age at these people at the time made me think about my life. Made me reflect and realize that I haven’t done anything of value that would be even slightely comparable to what these young people achieved. They were millionaires. They had their own brands, companies or YouTube Channels that blew up.
And I? I had nothing. Well, that’s not true. I had a job as a Paramedic, my own nice apartment and a fantastic girlfriend. But I didn’t see these things as “achievements”. I wasn’t being publicly praised and looked up upon by others. I figured that these were all normal things that everybody had or will have: A job, an apartment and a partner.
I completely lost track of all the valuable things I had, the great relationships I have build over the past years and the kind of life that I was living at the time. I had a completely false perception of what my life should look right now and what is beyond good and evil. I compared myself to the most achieving one percent of the world without thinking about why that is far from reality.
The reason I never thought about the comparison being unfair is that there are just sooooo many success stories out there nowadays. Social media allows us to watch so many people that we live under the false impression everybody we see resembles the majority of people on this planet.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Although it might look like it on YouTube or Instagram, but the people we see and the people we admire or envy are not part of a majority. They are a rare breed and that should not be forgotton!
So the next time you find yourself comparing your seemingly “boring” life to one of these people on YouTube that just bought their Porsche GT 3 RS remember; that is the one percentile of the world (Maybe a bit more by now) and if You compare Yourself to those people, You must do the same to the lowest one percent. But You don’t right? Because that would be? Hidious, right. So don’t do it either way. Don’t compare Yourself to anybody and don’t stress about achieving a specific thing at a specific time.
Keep Your goals in mind and move and work towards them at a steady pace.
